Albin’s Tale Of Overcoming His Loneliness Through Therapy

3 minutes

Albin Nair is a 30-year-old Senior software engineer at TVS Motors in Bangalore.

Albin lived with his family, including his parents and younger sister, until he moved to Bangalore for his career. He says he has always had a good relationship with his family. He explains that he has been an introvert since childhood and feels comfortable not being in the limelight.

“I don’t like conversing with people unless there is a reason to. I don’t try to interact just for the sake of doing it, and I’m comfortable this way.”

Albin elaborates that he has made only a handful of friends and has always kept it that way. However, when Albin moved to Bangalore for his job, it became hard for him as he began missing his friends.

Even though he pursued his degree away from home, he stayed within his state. He explains that even though he wasn’t keen on socialising or going out, being in a new city where the people, food, and everything were different made Albin feel lonely. He also felt that his old friends were busy with their lives, and he couldn’t have an open conversation with them either.

“I felt like I needed my friends back, but I’m not someone who would voluntarily push myself into other people’s lives. It caused a mental struggle for me.”

Albin also says he was distracted in his new workplace and couldn’t perform to his own expectations. Albin came across the emails from the HR department regarding their tie-up with YourDOST. He thought it could be a good platform to address his issues. He went on the platform and tried around three sessions on the same day through chat and call sessions.

He continued the follow-up sessions with Ms Deepti K Acharya as he felt more comfortable with her. Albin explains that Ms Deepti was receptive to everything he shared and understood what he was trying to communicate.

“Although I knew how to deal with my situation, I just needed clarity if my perspective was right. My counselor gave the validation I needed.”

He says he noticed his mood and emotional state changing after every session. The sessions helped Albin reduce his feeling of loneliness, and the counselor took an affirmative approach to help him.

He thanks his counselor for being accepting and non-judgemental throughout all their sessions and rates himself 3 out of 5 in terms of feeling better.

As Albin tries to better himself daily, we wish him the best in his professional and personal life.

Albin’s Warrior tips:
1.“We won’t know how helpful therapy can be unless we try it.”
2.“Ignore the judgements of people and prioritise your mental health.”
