Uncertainty to Precision: Nishant’s Story Of Untangling His Situations Through Therapy

Nishant is a 24-year-old corporate employee working as an associate at Tech Mahindra.

He was born in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, and lived there until he finished his schooling, then moved to Mathura to pursue his engineering. He also enjoys playing volleyball and cricket in his free time.

Nishant explains that he originally comes from a five-member middle-class family. Since childhood, he has shared a strong bond with his father, who is a farmer. 

“Even though I lived with my mom, siblings and my grandma, my dad was my best friend. In every decision of my life, I consult with him and take his advice seriously. He is the hardest-working and honest person I have ever seen, and he is my role model.”

As Nishant graduated and started working, things seemed to be going well for him. Suddenly, one day, his father fell ill and was hospitalised. He felt his entire world crumbling down as his condition required prolonged bed rest and hospitalisation.

“My father has been admitted for the past six months, and these have been the hardest days of my life. As the eldest son in the family, I had to resume the responsibilities of my father.”

Nishant explains that balancing his job, taking care of his family, and looking after his dad has had a significant impact on his mental well-being. He adds that it has been a stressful phase in his life, and he started feeling depressed and sad in the beginning. It started making him feel more tense and cry every day as he couldn’t handle it, and this led to a lot of headaches.

He understood that to be a pillar to his family members, he had to take care of himself first, so he consulted with the counselors in his office about what he could do. They made him aware of the company’s subscription to the YourDOST platform for the employee assistance programs.

“They suggested the platform to me and told me that the experts will be able to guide me about my life and show me the right path in my journey.”

Taking their advice, Nishant started connecting with Ms Anjali for the sessions. He says that during the first session, she was supportive and kind-hearted towards him. He explains that she listened to his issues calmly and patiently. 

He elaborates that the counselor started helping him with a practical approach. She made him realise the difference in resolving the situations that were in his control and those that weren’t. She slowly taught him to let go of those situations and not worry about them.

To help with his emotions and health, the counselor suggested that Nishant exercise regularly. She also made him write down his thoughts and visualise them to see the practical implications and gain clarity. It helped him identify his problems and introspect towards the solutions. Ms Anjali also sent him articles to read whenever he felt emotionally low. 

Apart from the emotional support, the counselor also helped Nishant tackle some issues in his professional capacity. She gave him a solution and also had a conversation with his colleague to help him guide him through the problem. 

“With the excellent support I received from Ms Anjali, I started feeling confident again and began believing that there’s still good in people.”

As he benefits from the techniques taught by the counselor, Nishant credits her for putting in the effort to help him work on his issues and going the extra mile for him. He rates himself 4 out of 5 and feels comfortable dealing with life’s situations.
