Hurt by the Sharp Dagger of Betrayal, Sam’s Story of Acceptance with Therapy

“Only those you trust can betray you.”- Terry Goodkind.

A betrayal in any form, be it from a friend, a partner or a loved one can be hurtful, and when it comes in at an unexpected point, the wound goes deeper into the heart. Trust is the foundation on which all relationships are built and if the foundation isn’t strong enough, the relationship won’t be meant to be.

Meet Sam (name changed), a 25-year-old professional from Karnataka, currently working in the real estate sector at IL TakeCare – ICICI in Pune.

Despite having a difficult childhood, Sam shares a rather cordial relationship with her family providing a stable backdrop to her life. She enjoys good music and travelling to ease her soul and mind.

As said in Forrest Gump, “Life is a box of chocolates, and we do not know what we get next”, we are not responsible for the destiny that life throws at us. Similarly going through various phases of life, Sam never had the opportunity to understand the hidden agenda of many around her.

“I learned about YourDOST from my workplace as they have collaborated with the organization as their official mental health partner. Here I met my therapist and began my healing journey with her. My counsellor is a great listener with immense patience and I felt supported throughout her counselling sessions.”

Sam’s life took a downturn over a period of five months, during which she faced several significant personal challenges. She had a good relationship with a friend and decided to help a colleague from the office with marriage finances.

However, Sam felt betrayed and distressed when her colleague refused to return the money. She had trusted the person so much that she was comfortable helping her with money, and she was shaken up when she backstabbed her with betrayal.

Around the same time, she experienced a devastating break-up when her ex-partner cheated on her, facing yet another episode of extreme betrayal. The people whom she trusted the most turned out to be the ones who caused her most pain.

“Both these situations had made me crumble from inside and I felt heartbroken. It became bad to the point that I started experiencing suicidal thoughts and that’s when I decided that therapy would be my way out.”

Sam’s counsellor focused on practical techniques to help her regain control over her life. These included getting to bed early, practising yoga, and keeping track of her regular food and water intake. Breathing exercises were also suggested to help manage anxiety and stress.

With consistent support and guidance, Sam began to notice positive changes in her life. Acceptance of her circumstances became easier, and she developed a more positive outlook. The coping strategies she learned during her sessions provided her with the tools to manage her emotions and build resilience, which helped her navigate through difficult times with poise and grace.

“My life felt like a parched land, lost in a jungle. My counsellor brought me back to solid ground, and I am grateful to her for everything.”

Sam recalls her counsellor’s empathetic and non-judgmental approach which made a significant impact, helping her navigate through her darkest moments. The counsellor played a crucial role in this transformation with a combination of empathy, practical advice, and unwavering support which helped Sam regain her confidence and find peace.

Reflecting on her journey, Sam rates herself in terms of feeling better, a 4.5 out of 5, envisioning continued improvement and peace in her life. She stands as a testament to the power of professional support and the impact it can have on personal growth and mental health.

We at YourDOST are proud to have been a part of Sam’s journey and wish her all the best for her future!
