‘Oprah’, a name associated with success and inspiration, needs no introduction. A popular face on TV, her famous ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’ has reached audiences in nearly 107 countries. Oprah has many feathers to her hat like being a famous TV show personality, an actress, an entrepreneur, a billionaire media executive, and a philanthropist to name a few.

Oprah Winfrey is known to be one of the richest and most influential women in the USA. Just like many other successful people, Oprah has had her share of adversities in her journey to success.

Let us delve into the compelling narrative of Oprah’s life, exploring the challenges she overcame and the multifaceted roles that have given her iconic status.

Challenging Beginning

“The way you treat a child, from the time that child is born, is what sets them up to either succeed or struggle.”

Oprah Gail Winfrey was born to a soldier and an unwed teenage mother in Mississippi in 1954. A childhood filled with poverty and hardships, Oprah had to live with her grandmother when her mother worked in Milauwakee to make ends meet. They were so poor that sometimes her dresses were fashioned from old potato sacks. Financial struggles made her shuttle back and forth between her mother and grandmother.

Later she was sent to her father and stepmother in Tennessee. This transition, though challenging, was a blessing in disguise. Vernon, her father, provided a supportive environment, fostering her education. They frequented libraries, where Oprah became a well-read child who skipped a grade and directly got admitted into third grade.

The transformation extended beyond academics. Visiting the church regularly gave Oprah a platform to improve her oratory skills.

After living with her father for one year, Oprah decided to stay with her mother and continue her education.

Dark and Troubled Teenage Years

Oprah’s teenage years were the most challenging and traumatizing times. When Oprah’s mother did not have time to take care of her children, she requested Oprah’s 19-year-old cousin to babysit them. Instead of being protected, nine-year-old Oprah was raped by him. In the following years, Oprah was abused by her family friend and her uncle. Having a poor relationship with her mother, Oprah was unable to open up about her devastating experiences. Unable to suffer anymore, she ran away from her house when she was 13 years old.

With no alternative refuge, Oprah sought a secure environment with her father. Unfortunately, she became pregnant due to the previous sexual abuse she underwent while living with her mother. She underwent a painful loss when the baby was born prematurely and died soon after.

A Turning Point in Oprah’s Life

“The great courageous act that we must all do is to have the courage to step out of our history and past so that we can live our dreams.”

Oprah’s father did not allow his daughter to suffer from this misfortune. He helped her forget the loss of the child and focus on her studies. Oprah, a gifted child, worked hard and became the top student in her school with amazing oratory skills. She earned a seat at the Tennessee State University for a Bachelors in Communication.

At 19 years old, Oprah bagged the opportunity to become the first African American co-anchor on the CBS evening news show. Being an empathetic person, she used to become emotional while reading tragic news. This resulted in her being demoted to host the “The People Talk” show where people from various walks of life were interviewed. Her oratory skills and compassion made this show a hit.

The famous ‘Oprah Winfrey’ show

“Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.”

After seven years of working as a co-anchor, Oprah was hired as a host by ABS Productions to improve the ratings of their morning show. Oprah shifted the focus of the show from traditional issues faced by women to current topics. This resulted in the show becoming the highest-rated talk show, overtaking many rivals.  What was earlier known as a general chat show, now became the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’ where matters of high social relevance were discussed. This show lasted for 25 seasons and also won 47 Daytime Emmy Awards.

Being an empathetic person made it easier for the guests to talk openly on her show. Oprah, a smart young lady, knew how to listen. She asked the right questions. Being a straight and unassuming person helped her connect with the audience.

No more looking back

“No matter what has happened, you get a chance to rewrite the script.”

From here, Oprah found success in many paths of life. She started her own production house known as Harpo Productions Ltd. Starring in films, she became a critically acclaimed actress and even got nominated for Oscars. She began The Oprah Book Club, where new releases would be discussed. These books soon became bestsellers, making Oprah a prominent figure in the publishing industry. The “Oprah Effect” came into being where any product endorsed by Oprah would become a commercial success. Known as the “Queen of All Media”, Oprah has made her mark in the fields of radio, news, TV shows, and magazines.

She was crucial in promoting the National Child Protection Act in the USA. Known as a philanthropist, Oprah has given grants to women empowerment, education, and disaster relief organizations.
