“A man’s spirit is free, but his pride binds him with chains of suffocation in a prison of his own insecurities” – Jeremy Aldana.
Alok (name changed), who is 22-year-old, is a student from IIT Mandi pursuing his Btech. Alok belongs to a nuclear family and has his hands on programming as his hobby. Alok is not only a bright student with good grades, but he also enjoys painting.
“I was developing various issues on an everyday basis which didn’t make sense. One day, the problems could be career-related, the next day it could be relationships.”
The issues that Alok was facing couldn’t be traced to a root cause. Alok realised that he had signs of insecurities within him. This often made him feel anxious. Coming to his college and career, Alok also wanted to be the best of best. This urge for perfectionism fueled his anxiety to higher levels. Eventually, Alok was left with a sense of self-doubt. He had also gone through a break-up back in school which made him fear that he would never feel the same for anybody else in the future.
“I was deeply engraved by the fear of failure and had a constant thought of not wanting to be average.”
Alok’s insecurities crept into such levels that it took a toss over his appetite as well as sleep schedule. Alok, being a reserved person, was living a sedentary lifestyle and didn’t talk to a lot of people. But this made it difficult for him to sort out the issues that were swallowing him from inside.
“I decided to take control over this situation and talk to a counselor. So I connected with YourDOST.”
Alok got in touch with Shweta Pratap, a counselor from YourDOST, through his institution resources. Alok was connected with Shweta through audio calls and although he was a bit hesitant in the beginning, later he opened up well.
Alok eventually battled his deep-rooted cause, his insecurities. Shweta suggested Alok to practise guided meditation in which he had to ignore any thoughts that came to him throughout the meditation. As soon as Alok re-started meditation, he was elated to see the magic! Alok’s counselor also made a few follow-ups with him regarding the same.
“Shweta was empathetic and listened to me clearly. The counselors don’t judge and have so much unbiased thought regarding the problems.”
After the sessions, Alok felt as if some burden had been lifted off his shoulders. Not only did his eating habits recover, but so did his sleeping cycle. Alok also realised that overstressing the fact that he would never feel for another person the same way was pointless. He rather developed the idea of waiting for a person who aligns with his thoughts and goals. Alok rates his overall progress through counseling with a solid 4 out of 5.
His accomplishments are very inspiring to us at YourDOST. We wish him all the best in the future!
