Vikram Singh’s Story Of Contemplating His Thoughts Through Therapy

5 minutes

Vikram Singh is a 26-year-old employee in the IT Sector, living in Gurgaon. He pursued his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology.

He is originally from Haryana and has lived in Uttarakhand for 20 years. He comes from a family of four, which includes his parents and sister. As his father’s work required them to move to different cities, Vikram attended school in various parts of India.

“My dad is in CISF, so he moves around a lot. Even now, while I’m here in Gurgaon for my career, my mom and sister are in Uttarakhand, and my dad is in Delhi.”

Vikram explains that he used to have a lot of interest in sports, such as cricket and basketball. Still, due to the monotonous and time-consuming nature of his job, his lifestyle became more sedentary. Vikram adds that he spends his free time researching technical developments and technology mostly.

Despite the list of things that he would like to change in his life, one thing he looks forward to keeping the same is his relationship with his partner. While Vikram is in a happy place, he had to cross a few roadblocks in life before reaching where he is.

When Vikram just started his career and was working in his first corporate job, there was a state of confusion for a few days. He had a close friend who lived in a different city, and since they were geographically apart, whenever Vikram contacted her, there was little response from her side. Around her birthday, Vikram wasn’t sure if he should contact and wish her or not.

He wanted to discuss this with someone who could give him an unbiased opinion and help him make a decision. He recollected that one of the students in college mentioned his college’s tie-up with YourDOST platform when there were a lot of talks and awareness about mental health during the lockdown.

Vikram logged in with his college ID and started using the platform to find clarifications. He began connecting with the experts. He met with Ms Ishita Attri in his second session and continued with her as he found her to be observant and helpful.

“The counselor would keep asking me questions until I stumbled upon the answers by myself. This helped me introspect and deal with my self-doubts.”

He explains that he was impressed with how the sessions went. He says that no matter how genuine his friends were, their perspectives would always be biased in his favour. However, in therapy, he realised that he can get unbiased guidance and also a space that would be gentle on his emotions.

Keeping that in mind, Vikram continued his sessions to address other issues related to his career and personal life. He explains that he needed some guidance regarding his professional opportunities and an issue concerning his sleep pattern.

He shared with Ms Ishita about the recurring and repetitive dream he had every night, which pushed him into an overthinking spiral. Listening to each of his issues, the counselor used to give suggestions and help him face the difficult questions to nudge him towards figuring out his next steps.

He also started journaling whenever he was overthinking or having overwhelming thoughts. This eventually helped him stop these kinds of thoughts completely and gain insights about himself. Vikram explains that he stopped worrying about his career and started to be proactive about understanding himself more.

As he started seeing the differences in himself, Vikram showed his gratitude towards his counselor by appreciating everything Ms Ishita did in the sessions to help him.

“The counselors are doing a really good job making life easier for a lot of people by helping them step by step. Any day I need help regarding mental wellness, Ms Ishita would be the first person I would approach. She is very good at what she does.”

As Vikram continues to make positive progress, he rates himself 4 out of 5. We are happy to see him improve and wish him all the best.
