Finding Victory Over Adversity With The Help of Counseling: This is Urvashi’s Story.

T.W. Self Harm

Amidst the clamour and chaos of Delhi, Urvashi’s life blossomed. Urvashi was a young vibrant girl at the age of 22 carrying shimmering dreams in her eyes, is an aspiring medical student. Being a single girl child, she grappled with the weight of societal expectations, being alone and fighting her battles each day.

Talking about her hobbies, dancing to rhythmic music brought inner peace and sweating in badminton made her feel alive. These two hobbies were like wings that allowed her to soar above the challenges. However, her sleeping schedule was a tangled thread that disrupted her productivity. The night’s silence was deafening to her ears. She wished for someone to unravel the complexities of her thoughts.

Life is like a canvas where colours of happiness and struggles often blend. For Urvashi, there were moments when the canvas felt heavy with emotions, seeking a compassionate ear to lighten.

When the world was locked from the outside, it was difficult to be confined and surrounded by four walls. Taking a test of our mental well-being, was treacherous. The shadows of frustration and solitude grew stronger making us restless. Like a never-ending storm, her anger grew at large.

“The feeling of being left out leaves you frustrated. Not having anyone to communicate with and a sense of loneliness weighed heavily on my mind.”

The lockdown was a turning point in Urvashi’s life. The isolation accentuated her feelings and made things difficult for her. The lack of meaningful connections was taking its toll leaving her exhausted and disheartened. The whispers of self-harm knocked on her door, yet she recognised their danger.

“The people around me seemed willing to listen to my problems, but instead of providing comfort or helpful advice, they would instead point out mistakes which barely solved my problems.”

Amid her struggles, a ray of hope existed. Her father has stood strong like an oak tree protecting her from the harmful sunrays throughout. Her father’s organisation had tied up with YourDOST to cater to mental health well-being. Urvashi took that bold step to seek help from the experts to fight thoughts whirling inside her.

Urvashi had found her guardian angel who could help her with self-introspection with her guiding tips. She connected with Ms. Ranjitha to straighten her things out.

Ms Ranjitha recommended Urvashi to follow some techniques to cope with her difficulties. Physical activities and the art of expressing anger through written words on paper became her steps towards healing. These were not mere exercises; they were her instruments to compose a balance in life. With her counselor’s compassionate guidance, she found the solace she sought.

“It had worked like magic for me. Ranjitha was sweet and kind. She did not judge my problems and made me comfortable. She came like a guardian angel to show the correct path. I’m forever grateful for her efforts in changing my life.”

Stepping into a new world, Urvashi faced all her challenges and fought through her fear with courage and grace. She felt a flicker of excitement and enjoyed this new Urvashi that she had become.

As Urvashi reflected on her journey, she noted the positive changes. Her sleep cycle which was once tangled, evolved into a good night’s symphony. Her ferocious tempest of anger became calm as a still lake. The darkest thoughts of self-harm had receded like shadows in the presence of light.

Urvashi rates herself a 4 out of 5 in terms of getting better and attaining positivity towards life. She believes in radiating positivity around often and making this world a better place to live in.

Her journey much like a dance, reminds us that even in the face of shadows, one can find melody and rhythm, dancing through life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

Urvashi’s Warrior Tips:
1.“She recommends everyone to listen to the song, “Yaha Koi Nahi Hain” as a reminder that they are not alone.”
2.“Every student has to go through some sort of pressure. Sometimes you have to ignore other pressures that life throws at you to concentrate on what’s up ahead for you.”
