The Journey of Finding Gold Through Consistency: Rakshita’s Story of Mental Health

4 minutes

When gold miners dig in tunnels to find gold deposits, they work restlessly until they find the gold ores. If someone digs 99 times and returns when they don’t find any, the next person who comes may dig one final time and find the gold!

Here is the story of a person who kept striking the mine until she found gold! Her name is Rakshita, a 25-year-old research associate at IIM Udaipur. Brought up in a humble household in Manvi, a small town in Karnataka, Rakshita’s story is proof of the saying, “Fruits of labour are always sweeter than gold.”

Rakshita completed her schooling in her hometown, moved to different cities for higher studies, and finally went to IIM Udaipur for work.

“During my childhood, I was an all-rounder kid. Good in studies and extracurricular activities alike.”

She was an achiever in every field, which in turn pressured her, in the long run, to do well continuously everywhere. She explains that as a trauma response, most of her other childhood memories are mentally blocked, and she can’t seem to recollect them.

“I started feeling emotionally drained as not a day passed without me being anxious about the most trivial matters. Even a simple email or feedback triggered panic attacks every day.”

The anxiety of being an overachiever and the pressure to be perfect started getting in her way of a successful career. She turned to seek help and her peers suggested YourDOST and its services to help find the right person she could open up to.

“I met Dr Seema Seth from YourDOST as my therapist. I remember in the first session, she listened to me attentively and waited patiently to know the entirety of my being.”

Rakshita felt warm and welcoming as Dr Seema enquired about all her concerns and doubts and analysed them instead of jumping to conclusions immediately. She explained to her therapist how the pressure of doing perfectly well at work and the stress of delivering the best started affecting her mentally.

They talked about a myriad of reasons that may have triggered the anxiety. Rakshita explained how handling a full-time job, personal life, preparing for higher studies, and applications for them all became a source of stress to her. Dr Seema helped her work on herself and introduced her to several coping strategies to overcome her fears.

According to the activities assigned, Rakshita started questioning the integrity of her emotions, following a proper workout routine, meditation, etc. She put conscious effort into being consistent with all these activities.

When we feel anxious about something, it does not only affect only one part of our mind. It affects the whole system, and we may find ourselves in mental turmoil. The same was the case with Rakshita, as her mental health started affecting her personal life too. However, with proper guidance and opinions from her therapist, she started seeing positive changes in her demeanour.

“I worked through the routines, as suggested by Dr Seema and started seeing results not long after. I passed my GMAT examination and currently have three offers for higher education. She deserves all the credit for my achievements because she was the only one who helped me through intense moments of anxiety and overcome them.”

“During my worst times, I even considered taking medications for my anxiety, as it was that bad.”

Rakshita describes how she’s much calmer and in control of her thoughts and emotions, only because she puts consistent effort into getting better. She feels that her self-esteem has improved drastically and has the mental strength to question the validity of any negative thoughts that arise.

“I have sincere gratitude towards Seema as she helped me immensely at a time when my anxiety was through the roof. She was an amazing listener and her techniques helped me find myself in a better way.”

Rakshita has been working continuously on her mental well-being and rates herself a fantastic 4 out of 5 in terms of feeling better. She describes her improvement to be in a better state of mental health and finding coping mechanisms to control her emotions. We at YourDOST are truly ecstatic at her improvement and are glad she could finally strike gold at the end!

Rakshitha’s Warrior Tips:
1.“Anxiety is just a symptom of a bigger underlying issue. Find the root cause of your concerns and start working on them.”
2.“Get a hold of your emotions that stop you from achieving your best.”
