Before setting a goal you need to know why you would do it. Some things may interest you but then that doesn’t become your passion. Your passion has to be something which would make you work hard for. Playing video games isn’t the same as spending hours designing your own.
Keep these things to keep in mind while looking for your passion:
1. Your job need not be your passion
You don’t have to be skilled at doing something you are passionate about. Your job need not be your passion. According to Thoolen, you can have your passion based on three things. Firstly, the ego, which makes you compare yourself to other constantly. It makes you evaluate whether you are superior or inferior to others. Your ego makes you want more possessions and achievements in order to make an impression on others. Secondly, the soul, including your individuality and authenticity. It fills you with energy and passion for doing something that is right for you. Thirdly, the spirit, which makes you aware of your ego and your passion.
2. Find things you are mediocre at
Most successful people who are most passionate about their work, are never defined by a single skill. For example, Steve Jobs was not the world’s best engineer, salesperson, designer or businessman, but he was good enough at all of these things. Adopting several skills can help you build yourself and find your passion. There doesn’t have to be a single passion.
3. Do what you enjoy
While looking for what you are passionate about narrow vision becomes a great obstacle. You can continue to experiment with different things. Dabbling is the key to finding out what drives you. It means you commit to something for 3-6 months. This time will give you enough time to get over the sharp learning curve. If you feel something doesn’t interest you even after this then try something new. You can go about doing only what you enjoy doing.
4. Don’t wait for the “eureka” moment
While some may find the inspiration needed instantly, some will have to work. Visualise different things and try understanding what makes you feel the best. Challenge yourself and do things out of your comfort zone. You may have to walk work towards the “eureka” moment instead of waiting for it.
