Living with a stigma is one of the most difficult things that we come across during our lifetime. Be it a celebrity or a common person, the way we feel about ourselves is the most undermining factor about ourselves.
Christmas is around the corner and Lady Gaga visited the Ali Forney Center for homeless LGBT youth in New York. where the multiple-Grammy-Award-winner revealed that she has been living with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) after being raped at the age of 19.
PTSD is a mental disorder, that can develop in a person after going through a traumatic event such as sexual assault, traffic collisions, warfare or threats to personal life. Its symptoms could be disturbing thoughts, mental or physical distress to trauma cues, or changes in how a person feel.
Lady Gaga says,
I suffer from PTSD. I’ve never told anyone that before, so here we are. But the kindness that’s shown to me by doctors as well as my family, and my friends, it’s really saved my life.
Most of the times we are so ignorant about how to deal with certain situations like this and are scared to come out in the open. Sooner we identify this situation the easier it is to deal with it. She said,
I have a mental illness, and I struggle with that mental illness every day.
Most power to you Lady Gaga for coming out in the open about mental illness and empowering those who are in the same state of mind.
