Nikhil’s Journey Of Gaining Insights And Improvement in Life Through Counseling

5 minutes

Nikhil is a 23-year-old software developer at Echo India, Delhi, and a vlogger who posts lifestyle video blogs on social media on his weekends. He currently resides in Greater Noida and loves painting and gaming in his free time.

Nikhil comes from a family of four, including his parents and sister. He adds that as a kid, he was calm and never worried about anything as he lived with his parents, who took good care of him.

“Growing up having no responsibility was a blessing. There’s no tension since I was just a kid, but things changed once I moved to college, away from home.”

Nikhil explains that his journey from college to getting a job and being independent has changed him. He had to get used to being responsible, and he learned to live on his own and manage his diet, household, daily routine, etc. He became more mature, mindful, and serious when he transitioned from childhood to adulthood.

As life moved on, suddenly, one day, Nikhil fell ill, and it became serious. This impacted his routine and made him feel low mentally. At the same time, he was also going through some relationship issues. Managing his emotions under both these circumstances was challenging for Nikhil, and he wasn’t comfortable sharing this with any of his family members or friends.

“At that point in my life, I was at home and going many things simultaneously. I thought it would be better to speak to someone more knowledgeable who could give me perspective about my situation. I immediately reached out to the experts at YourDOST through my company’s subscription.”

Nikhil elaborates that he knew about the importance of mental health in the office and that they provided access to the YourDOST platform as part of their employee assistance program. He started connecting with Ms Anjali during his first session. He shared all his issues with her, and Nikhil adds that she had a calming effect on him and gave him the right guidance.

He began taking regular sessions with Ms Anjali as he trusted her methods and opened up about all his feelings and thoughts. To help Nikhil, other than hearing him out, the counselor asked him to write down everything he was dealing with – from his situation to every question he had on his mind.

“Once I write down everything, the counselor and I discussed them one by one. She suggested I try to look at them differently about how I could tackle things.”

This helped Nikhil gain clarity and perspective on his situation. During the sessions, Nikhil also realised that it wasn’t just him and that there were many people going through many difficulties in life. He understood that he wasn’t alone in the journey and that Ms Anjali would guide him through the phase.

The counselor told him to follow his entire routine mindfully for a week so that they could discuss it in the session. Through this, they discovered he needed a better routine and lifestyle.

To focus on his gut health and nutritious routine, Ms Anjali gave him alternative ways to shift his energy towards healthy goals. She suggested that he consult a nutritionist and start doing yoga or go to the gym at least for 45 minutes.

Nikhil elaborates that they continued the weekly review of his routine, and the counselor acknowledged his improvement. When Nikhil expressed his concerns about being occupied with the new routine and not having time for things that interest him, Ms Anjali gave him a mechanism to take one day a week to do only what makes him happy, even if that was having a cheat meal.

“The way my counselor made the guidance flexible to match my needs were extremely helpful, and all of these helped me learn to co-exist with the problems I was facing.”

Nikhil adds that instead of running from his problems, he learned to deal with them. He slowly moved on from the relationship issues, and even his mood improved consistently. He explains that at the beginning of the sessions, he used to be really depressed, but towards the end, he became clearer and confident and started enjoying life every day despite the situations.

As he sees the improvement, he thanks his counselor for making therapy life-changing and for motivating him to find the right path. He rates himself 4 out of 5, and we are happy to be part of his journey!
