Introversion To Introspection: Rohit’s Story Of Mastering His Social Skills Through Counseling

5 minutes

Meet Rohit, a 27-year-old business development executive at Upgrad.

He was born in Hyderabad, Telangana State, to a nuclear family consisting of his mother, father, and two elder sisters. Rohit adds that he spent more time with his family than playing with friends during childhood.

“I have had one of the best times in my childhood. I have a lovely family, and we used to be extremely affectionate with each other.”

Rohit says that when it comes to the outside world, he is an introvert who has limited conversations and socialises only with familiar people in his school. He shares that after school, he joined a Bachelor’s in Technology course for his undergraduate studies and took a break after completion.

Eventually, when Rohit started working at Upgrad, his introversion made it challenging for him to interact with people, which began to trouble him. Rohit adds that his job was to communicate with multiple clients daily.

Facing difficulty in the area where he wanted to prove his excellence, Rohit started doubting his abilities. With a hectic work schedule, Rohit couldn’t spend time on recreational activities, which stressed him out more.

“Every issue I had started to feel huge and exaggerated in my head. I felt helpless. I wanted to understand and analyse my thoughts and behaviour patterns.”

Recalling his company’s tie-up with the YourDOST platform, Rohit explored his options and began taking sessions from the experts available. Rohit shares that he booked his first session at 8 a.m. on a fine morning, which made him feel refreshed the whole day.

He explains that the counselor made him feel comfortable enough to open up and patiently listened to everything he had to say. Rohits recollects sharing with the therapist about his issues due to the contradiction between his job and personality and how it threatened his future aspirations.

“I wanted to be better in what I was doing professionally and have open communication in my personal life. I also aspire to become an entrepreneur in the future. For all of these, I had to improve interpersonal skills.”

Rohit explains that when someone asks him a question, he used to feel anxious, as it was hard for him to answer spontaneously. After a while, Rohit even reached a low point and started having severe negative thoughts as he was isolating himself.

“I felt judged by people, began shutting myself out more, and wasn’t talking to even the people in the next room to mine. My mind was filled with negative thoughts and emotions.”

Understanding Rohit’s situation, the therapist first taught him to take one step at a time. Then, after every session, the therapist gave him worksheets to work on before the next session. These worksheets involved questions and activities related to introspection and self-awareness.

Rohit explains that the counselor also helped him prioritise essential tasks and guided him in bringing structure to his life. He adds that he was binge eating to cope with a stressful situation. The therapist made him reduce the mechanism slowly by making him shift to healthy food first, eventually eliminating the mechanism altogether and replacing it with taking a walk or listening to music.

Eventually, Rohit started noticing improvements in his life. Following all the techniques in therapy, he got better at socialising and could feel his progress.

“The changes didn’t happen all of a sudden. It was a slow and steady process, but with the guidance of my therapist, I got where I wanted to be, and the fear I used to have towards communicating to people has vanished.”

Rohit explains that he consistently focused on his progress without emphasising people’s opinions. Therapy has also helped him find techniques to improve his productivity scale.

Acknowledging all his progress, Rohit is grateful to his counselor for guiding him towards a healthy lifestyle and helping him build the skills he needed to resolve his issues.

“The counselor was like a friend to me; she never made me feel out of place. I’m standing here walking towards my goals because of her support. She has moulded me into a better person.”

Rohit rates himself 4.5 out of 5, so we are proud of him and wish him all the best in his future goals.
