Gaurav’s Story Of Rewiring His Thoughts With Counseling

Gaurav is a 37-year-old assistant professor at one of the top business schools in Bangalore. He also works in theatrical productions and has a passion for acting, directing and writing, along with his academic career.

He was born and raised in Delhi and was close to his parents. He explains that he was a shy and reserved kid who took time to open up to people. He adds that he was good at studies and participated actively in sports like cricket.

Gaurav explains that during school, he used to be too shy even to perform a speech in front of people, but that has changed as he has grown to be confident on the theatre stage as well as the classroom podium.

After Gaurav’s father passed away two years ago, it has been only him, his mother and his brother in his family. Gaurav faced a challenging period managing research deadlines while simultaneously navigating personal matters. 

“I felt overwhelmed and wanted to talk through my thoughts with someone. Then, it just clicked that my institution provides access  to the YourDOST platform.”

As everything was happening together, Gaurav decided to use the online portal to get support. During the first session, Gaurav explained that his counselor keenly listened to him and asked specific questions to nudge him towards an in-depth understanding of his issues. He adds that the experts were also approachable and professional in every session.

“I have never in life my life used any online platform for my mental health, but when I wasn’t able to be myself and was overthinking about a lot of things, I had to discuss with someone and find my focus back.”

The counselor helped Gaurav weigh each of his options to find the solution by making him evaluate the pros and cons of each option. They also made him research more about the solutions he came up with for his issues.

“Every technique the counselor helped me with helped me self-reflect on my thoughts and actions as I could connect with my inner self better.”

Gaurav explains that even simple exercises used in therapy helped streamline his focus and help him understand his behaviour and thought patterns.

“I credit the counselor for listening to me non-judgementally and giving me the proper guidance. I rate myself 5 out of 5 in terms of feeling better daily.”
