“When writing your life story, don’t let anyone else hold the pen”- Harley Davidson.
At 25, Soumya is carving her path here in our Garden City, Bengaluru. Originally from Devbhoomi, Uttarakhand- Soumya spent most of her life in Delhi- doing both her schooling and college there.
She comes from a family of four, including her father, mother and younger brother. She is also close to her two uncles and one aunt from her father’s side, who live in Delhi. As far as she can remember, this little group of her family have always spent time together on weekends and festivals.
She still has quite a big social circle in Delhi and meets up with them whenever she returns. She moved to the City of Bengaluru for a great job opportunity. She is currently working at IIFL as a product manager.
In the last two years of living in Bangalore, she has gotten into the cafe culture here, which she believes is unique to the city. Another hobby for Soumya, during her free time, is exploring the museums and art the city offers.
While Soumya has enjoyed most of her time here in Bengaluru, she mentions a time not too long ago when she felt at a loss, all because of the changes in her life.
One incident that put her off course was ending a long-term, long-distance relationship with her partner of three years. She remembers feeling uncertain about everything because her ex-partner did not communicate his side of the story correctly.
Another reason why Soumya felt some anxiety was the uncertainty that came with her work and some changes within teams. The stress that came from this resulted in a few physical symptoms, such as sleep deprivation, poor appetite, etc.
Feeling confused about her next steps, she decided to seek help through counseling. Since her organisation, IIFL Securities, partnered with YourDOST, she decided to try it.
Before trying counseling, she had engaged with the quizzes and tests on the platform. This time, she decided to connect with an expert.
Soumya remembers her first session with Ms Adhaysha as being very good. She felt the counselor was listening to her without judgement or preconceived notions.
Ms Adhyasha asked Soumya to list everything that happened during the week during their sessions, whether it was work, something to do with her ex-partner, or something else. This allowed Soumya to gain perspective on her emotions and how she could have handled one of those situations.
Soumya’s counselor suggested the following steps: a series of lifestyle changes to help with the loss of appetite and sleep. One such change was channelling negative emotions into hobbies, reading, and music, which had a massive impact.
“I have got a whole wall covered with mandala drawings now. They helped distract me from my mind.”
After the session, Soumya started noticing changes. One significant change she observed was how she got ready for work. She remembers not being excited to dress up for the office during her tough times, but counseling brought back that spark in her again.
The diet changes her counsellor suggested started working their magic, too. She now rates herself a 4 out of 5 in terms of feeling better.
Soumya’s Warrior Tips:
1.“Therapy helps give you clarity on your emotions as well as your situations in life.”
2.“Never be afraid to seek help because it can make a big difference.”
