Turning a “No” to a “Bring it On” with Therapy: Karan’s Story of Patience

4 minutes

“Out of difficulties grow miracles.” – Jean de La Bruyère.

This quote perfectly sums up how tough times can lead to remarkable changes. Challenges, though complex, often push us to grow and achieve things we never thought possible. When we face problems, we find our true strength and hidden talents, allowing great things to happen.

Karan (name changed) is a 28-year-old Data Scientist from West Bengal.

He works remotely for ADF Data Science Private Limited, which allows him to balance his professional and personal interests. He loves to cook, travel, and ride and finds joy in his hobbies.

“I had a good and pretty normal childhood and never felt short of anything at the time. I was a happy-go-lucky child with a content life!”

His family consists of his elder brother, his sister-in-law, their little son, and his mother. Despite having a loving family, Karan faced emotional challenges in his life that tested his patience and resilience.

Karan first heard about YourDOST through his workplace, which partners with the organisation as their official mental health partner. This partnership proved to be a lifeline for Karan when he needed it the most.

Karan’s journey with YourDOST began after a heartbreaking experience he had in college. He liked a girl and wished for them to become partners, but unfortunately his wishes weren’t fulfilled.

“I got heartbroken and couldn’t understand my own emotions. I proposed to a girl during college, but she rejected me.”

Despite this, Karan held onto hope. He thought she might have some reasons and waited two years before proposing again. They reconnected at an event, spent time together, and developed a strong friendship. When he proposed a second time, she rejected him again.

“I don’t have reasonable words to express what I felt at that point. I got depressed and was very sad. I kept wondering why it happened to me. Those thoughts were whirlpooling in my head.”

The repeated rejection plunged him into a state of deep sadness and depression. Feeling lost and desperate for relief, Karan turned to YourDOST. His first impression of the counselling process was scepticism mixed with hope. He needed someone to help him navigate his tangled emotions and thoughts.

One of the most effective techniques Karan learned was breaking down his thoughts. He practised this technique so they didn’t boomerang around his head. This technique, along with deep breathing exercises, helped him manage his anxiety and gain clarity.

“After I wrote down those negative thoughts, it was like I clearly saw my thoughts. Previously, it was like a boomerang, making rounds every two or three days. But after that, I could clearly see them.”

Writing down his thoughts and practising deep breathing gave him peace and helped him shift his perspective. He began seeing the world in new colours, and his perspective on his situations changed positively.

As it was Karan’s first time with counselling, he was keen on setting expectations with his therapists. He wanted to ensure they understood his concerns and effectively helped him navigate his emotional turmoil.

Questions like “What things to share?”, “What to decide?” and “What to expect?” were crucial, and his therapist helped him address these queries. Setting goals with his counsellor on what to expect while in therapy helped Karan navigate his journey in a better light.

Today, Karan expresses his heartfelt gratitude to his therapists.

“I must thank them. My counsellors helped me escape a very difficult situation, so I’m truly and deeply indebted to them for my positive perspective today.”

In terms of feeling better, Karan rates himself 4.3 out of 5. For him, improvement means having a peaceful sleep. He believes in the power of patience and the significance of giving oneself time to heal.

We are confident that Karan is on the path to achieving complete emotional well-being. He is just moments away from hitting the golden 5 mark in his journey of self-discovery and healing.

We at YourDOST wish him the best in the future!
