Transforming Life, One Step at a Time with Therapy: Adarsh’s Journey of Courage

Life is a roller coaster, filled with twists and turns that can leave you breathless. Just like a suspenseful movie, sometimes the plot thickens with unexpected challenges. The truly fulfilling moments in life are hard-earned and born out of perseverance and resilience to face whatever may come our way.

Meet Adarsh, our protagonist for today, whose story is a testament to this journey, where overcoming personal trials leads to self-discovery and growth.

Adarsh is a 27-year-old lawyer working in the legal department of DLF and hails from Delhi.

In 2017, Adarsh’s parents got divorced, and recently, in 2023, his father remarried. This new chapter brought in a fresh set of challenges, and while it wasn’t always easy, Adarsh braved these changes with diligence.

“My relationship with my father is not the best. We don’t connect much but on the flip side, I share a strong bond with my brother and keep in touch with my mother, who has moved forward in her life.”

Adarsh had a good childhood, being the first child in a joint family. Imagine the warmth of Diwali nights, the laughter echoing through the halls, the endless supply of sweets from doting relatives. He received love from everyone: his grandmother, grandfather, uncles, aunts, and his mother. However, in school, it was a different story.

“During my sixth and seventh grades, I faced bullying, which dimmed my self-worth and self-esteem. It wasn’t until the 11th or 12th grade that I found my inner confidence and bounced back.”

Books and public speaking are two of Adarsh’s favourite hobbies. He finds joy and relaxation in these activities, diving into the pages of a good book like Harry Potter discovering Hogwarts for the first time.

His journey with YourDOST began when his company, DLF, collaborated with the organization as their official mental health partner. They sent out emails about the service, and Adarsh decided to give it a try.

Adarsh met his counsellor, Ms Suchitra, on the platform and his first impression of her was that she was very patient and solution-oriented.

“She listened to me empathetically and pinpointed where I was wrong so I could improve. She was like a Jedi Master guiding her Padawan, helping me navigate the Force within myself.”

The reason Adarsh sought therapy was because of a relationship he was in. He needed tips on how to grow and handle that relationship, much like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube, each twist and turn leading to a more complex puzzle.

“I was also dealing with family relationship problems and sought help through sessions. After engaging in some sessions with Ms Suchitra, I started to see differences within myself and my relationships.”

At first, it was difficult to accept all the solutions she provided, but he realized they were the right methods. She explained that he could take short steps in the right direction, like Frodo’s gradual journey to Mount Doom.

“One of the techniques Ms Suchitra recommended was increasing my emotional quotient by not reacting immediately. She also advised me to be diplomatic and more assertive to maintain and gain new relationships.”

She further suggested meditation and journaling to help him, and it was like assembling the Avengers, with each strategy playing a crucial role in his battle against stress and uncertainty.

Adarsh noticed positive changes in himself as he became more aware of his and others’ thoughts and actions, understanding the motives behind them. He learned to be more accepting of others’ natures and more observant of their intentions.

“I cannot express in words the immense gratitude I feel for Ms Suchitra for guiding me through his problems. Thanks to her, I feel that I can tackle many issues more effectively today.”

In terms of feeling better, he rates himself a 4 out of 5, believing that improvement means being better than yesterday.
