Braving The Turbulence of Adulting with Therapy: Kabir’s Story of Healing

4 minutes

Adulthood is when most of us face the brutal reality of a world that was alien to us until then, and suddenly, it dawns on us. Living independently, fending for ourselves, taking care of finances, and caring for ageing parents all seem like a herculean task. However, with the proper support and guidance, the adulting era can be aced with flying colours!

Meet Kabir (name changed), a 24-year-old software engineer at Felurian Technology Pvt Ltd (Clickpost) and currently lives in Delhi.

As a child, Kabir was a studious kid with little social interaction. His family, consisting of his parents and a brother, has always been supportive, and he shares a special bond with his mother.

“My hobbies include playing sports, mainly cricket and football. I enjoy all kinds of offline or online sports, including chess and cricket.”

Kabir first heard about YourDOST through his workplace, which partners with the organisation as their official mental health partner. Feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of his new job, Kabir sought help. He chose Meghna Nair as his counsellor because she was patient and solution-oriented.

“I wanted someone who could listen and provide practical solutions, and Meghna was exactly that person.”

Kabir’s challenges began when he started his job. He felt immense pressure and financial stress, compounded by issues at home.

“It was simply overwhelming. I had never faced anything like this in my life before. College never prepared me for this kind of pressure.”

The constant stress made it difficult for Kabir to function. He felt unrestful, with a mix of emotions like sadness, depression, and anger.

“There was so much going on in my head. I couldn’t make myself still throughout the day.”

Seeking therapy, Kabir shared his problems with Meghna, and they discussed his issues in detail. Meghna introduced Kabir to various activities and techniques to help him manage his stress and anxiety.

“One of the key things Meghna taught me was to get into my window of tolerance. She suggested activities like deep breathing, PMR exercises, and body scan meditation. Even simple things like drinking cold water or eating chocolates helped.”

Meghna also encouraged Kabir to start journaling. He recalls that writing down his thoughts was a game-changer.

“It wasn’t just about my problems; it was more of a daily activity. Whenever I felt overwhelmed or overthinking, I would write it down and discuss it with Ms Meghna.”

Talking about his concerns and sharing his feelings helped Kabir find some relief.

“The conversations were therapeutic. Just having someone to talk to made things seem less daunting.”

Kabir noticed positive changes over time. He feels that today, he is way better than he was. He admits to not making massive strides on the positive side, but he has balanced things out. He now says he found some stability when he went downhill. His journey is ongoing, but Kabir is grateful for the progress he has made.

“I wanted a calm mind, and I’m getting there. I’m still on the journey of healing but way far from where I initially started.”

Kabir expresses deep gratitude for Ms Meghna’s guidance.

“She did so much for me. I owe her a lot. She was the only person I could turn to at that tough time. Her support was exceptional.”

In terms of feeling better, Kabir rates himself as 3 out of 5. For him, improvement means learning and growing, even if it’s just by 1%. He believes that if you can learn something new, then you’re improving.

We at YourDOST are confident that Kabir is on the path to a brighter future, and we wish him all the best for his future!

Kabir’s Warrior Tips:
1.“If anyone is not feeling well mentally, they should at least try to seek help from a counsellor or therapist.”
2.“The most important part of therapy is having conversations. Sharing your problems and feelings with a counsellor helps build understanding and allows things to go well.”
