Diya’s Story of Turning Grief into Greatness with Therapy

3 minutes

Life can be full of unexpected challenges that test our strength and determination over time. Overcoming these obstacles needs a level of resilience that exceeds everything and a positive mindset. This story is about finding inner strength, seeking help when needed, and the journey to emotional well-being.

Meet Diya (name changed), a 21-year-old, who works in the Chemical Industry and was born and raised in Maharashtra.

When Diya was just two years old, her parents separated. She moved with her mother to her maternal grandparents’ house, growing up without her father.

“This was a tough experience for me, as people often made hurtful comments about me being a girl. I felt a deep sense of responsibility to prove them wrong and provide for my mother more than a son would. I worked hard in my studies and was determined to become independent to achieve that.”

Besides her academic aspirations, Diya found comfort in her hobbies, like painting and drawing. These activities helped her stay calm and grounded during difficult times in life.

Diya discovered YourDOST through Katalyst India, an NGO that supports science and engineering students who lack financial support. They have an official collaboration as the mental health partner with the organisation. Initially, she was hesitant to share her story, but her counsellor made her feel comfortable and safe over time.

A major turning point in Diya’s life was the death of her grandfather in 2020. She was very close to him, seeing him as a father figure. Losing him was a huge emotional blow.

“He was always proud of my achievements and supported me in everything. This loss was too much for me to handle so I sought therapy, as I knew that I needed to be emotionally strong to support my family.”

In therapy, Diya learned important ways to manage her emotions.

“I used to feel numb and overthink a lot, which made me lose track of time. I would get angry with my mother and friends.”

Her counsellor suggested she track her emotions and understand what triggered her feelings by writing down her emotions in a journal. This helped Diya manage her anger and anxiety, especially when thinking about her grandfather which was a negative coping mechanism.

Therapy brought significant changes to Diya’s life. She started doing things more mindfully, paying attention to her interactions with family and friends.

“I began meditating, which helped me stay relaxed and reduce overthinking. These practices allowed me to handle my emotions in a better way.”

Diya is very grateful for her therapist’s help. Her counsellor’s support was crucial in helping Diya deal with her emotional struggles.

“When we share our feelings, we want to be heard without judgment or fear. My therapist gave me that safe space. “

Today, Diya rates herself a golden 5 out of 5 in terms of feeling better and she envisions improvement as being confident and loving herself.

“I am inspired by the character from the movie “Jab We Met,” who loves herself and stays positive as Everyone should love themselves first. Only then can we truly care for others.”

We at YourDOST are confident that Diya is on the right path and wish her all the best in her future endeavours!
