Bristi ’s Tale Of How She Forged Ahead Amidst Her Mental Block With Counseling

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

– Maya Angelou

Bristi is a 21-year-old student at Srishti Institute of Design, Arts and Technology Bangalore studying a Bachelor(s) in Textile and Apparel, from the reputed institute of Manipal Bangalore. Improving ourselves is something that we are taught to do right from childhood and with time we find ourselves becoming a better person from who we were yesterday and that is what improvement means.

Despite Bristi being a single child to her parents she was nurtured with warmth and love, and she had a lot of good friends since her school years.

She is from West Bengal and mentioned that there were times when she had a difficult childhood and a complicated relationship with her family.

She decided to come to therapy to basically work on herself and is now doing an internship. She is from a nuclear family, her grandad used to live with them. Her hobbies include resting and having a good sleep and a passionate gamer.

Everything was sailing smoothly for Bristi until a few negative thoughts started surrounding her and like it’s said, ‘life is like an ocean, it’s filled with ups and downs’, Bristi started experiencing low moods and disinterest in a lot of things she would do.

However, her zeal towards improvement didn’t let her fail so easily. Without wasting any time, she decided to reach out to a professional for advise on how to handle these thoughts and work on herself.

“I could not handle the grief of watching my cat and my grandad passing away. These incidents occurred one week after the other and I was put into a lot of shock and feeling of numbness.”

The feeling of why this happened the way it did was bugging her to great levels. Bristi turned to therapy as she came across an email where she found out that her college was having a partnership with YourDOST who was their official mental health partner and she decided to grab this opportunity.

Ms. Ekta was her counselor and she explained that her counselor was understanding, and compassionate and it helped her calm down.

She decided to come to therapy to self-improve and find out the root cause of a few issues she has faced in life.

“The best part about these counselors is that they can listen to you for hours and analyse your issues.”

Bristi was able to be vocal with Ms. Ekta about this that bothered her and she needed support regarding therapy to help her effectively.

She suggested that breathing exercises, 1-2-3 techniques, just regular conversation with her also helped me calm myself better.

“She is a major part of my life and our connection matched and it never felt like she was elder to me as she was compassionate with me.”

This inculcated in her a problem-solving attitude and in no time, she had adopted the idea of turning negative thoughts into positive challenges.

“The counselor said that whenever I face some problem, I should calm down and take two breaths. Then I should think about the solution.”

She developed a sense of reliability within himself and feels gratitude towards YourDOST as she states that she never missed a chance to talk to the counselor. Bristi  mentioned that whatever I am today, YourDOST has a major contribution to that.”

Today Bristi stands in a position where she believes that she can achieve anything by regaining his lost confidence. Not only did her attitude improve. We from YourDOST not only feel delighted for Bristi  but also wish that she makes it big out there. As rightly rated by her on her self-development, she surely is a 4 on 5.

Bristi’s Warrior Tips:
1.“Working towards a better tomorrow is important and equipping yourself with that mental space is equally vital.”
2.“Go out in the social set-up, expose yourself to others and build good bonds.”
