How Therapy Helped Dhiksha Bring Positivity To Her Life And Relationships

4 minutes

22-year-old Dhiksha (name changed) has been a studious child for as long as she can remember. Even the co-curricular activities she indulged in were academic. Her hobbies include drawing, painting, going on walks and reading books.

After her schooling, she is currently pursuing an Integrated M.Sc in Economics from the renowned institute of IIT Kharagpur. She is from Rajasthan and belongs to a close-knit family of 4, and joined YourDOST for therapy almost 5 months ago.

She is also slowly discovering her relationship with her family. Dhiksha expressed that her parents have been working mostly which also meant that she had to mostly be by herself as her elder sister also moved out while she was growing up.

This started developing some amount of abandonment issues in her. While Dhiksha was slowly becoming an individual she started meeting new people and becoming friends with them, identifying her likes and dislikes and shaping her personality.

Things seemed to go smoothly for her until things started becoming a little haywire in her relationship. She met somebody almost 3-4 years ago and they started talking and sparks flew within a week. Their similarities worked wonders in bringing them closer. And although on the surface things seemed to be working well, there were underlying issues that she started noticing later on.

“We spent really good times with each other. The relationship was going great.”

As the days progressed, they even met a few times. While they faced some starting troubles, Dhiksha believed that if they got through these tough times together then their bond would grow stronger. Things continued as they were but it wasn’t a smooth ride.

Dhiksha mentioned that she started finding it difficult to be in the relationship as it started affecting her mental and physical fights, due to constant fighting.

“My then-partner was not always around for me when I needed him. This would often make me feel abandoned. I stayed in the relationship because I invested my time. The thought of leaving him made me feel guilty.”

It was around this time she heard about YourDOST’s and its free subscription with its college and decided to come to seek counseling. Dhiksha wasn’t discouraged she was still optimistic for a long period. However, she couldn’t seem to get through and ended the relationship.

When she booked her session and connected with, Ms. Priyanshi Gupta she listened to her patiently.

“She made me see that it would take time and also explained that I should try to be positive and not be afraid of the consequences.”

One of the most important things that Ms Priyanshi helped Dhiksha with was how to stay on target. She explained that she could help her get out of the negative thoughts and suggested with techniques.

Dhiksha felt grateful for having found such an empathetic and practical counselor. She appreciated that Ms. Priyanshi prioritised her needs. These sessions were successful in helping Dhiksha overcome her overthinking and negative thought patterns. She feels better equipped to tackle painful situations better.

“5-4-3-2-1, Box-breathing, journaling and positive affirmation and appreciation were some of the techniques my counselor taught me to help me feel better, and they pushed me to becoming a better version of myself.”

Dhiksha expressed gratitude towards YourDOST as it helped her grow immensely. She summarised her journey as ‘optimistic’, something that gave her hope. She rated herself with a 4.5 out of 5 when asked about her improvement process.

She mentioned that some of her positive changes include that she has been able to deal with things smoothly. Earlier, she would always live in an out-of-focus mode and be distracted easily but it’s not the case anymore.

“There were things that I did not share about my childhood with anyone. But I was able to share that with her and it helped me so much. It felt as if a huge weight was lifted off from my shoulders.”

And surely, all of us at YourDOST feel the same! For being the true mental health warrior that she is, we wish Dhiksha the best of luck!
