Moving On Was The Best Gift I Gave Myself Says Jyoti After Seeking Therapy

4 minutes

26-year-old Jyoti is a PhD in Sociology student who loves to explore and talk to people, like most of us. However, simultaneously, she takes a step back while trusting someone. She is in her 2nd year at the reputed institute of JNU, Delhi.

“I always build that wall around myself and like to protect myself in such cases as I wouldn’t want to get hurt.”

Jyoti lives by the mantra, “I like to be happy with things that give me joy.”

She spends time reading books as it helps her channel her frustration healthily. As a part of self-care, Jyoti ensures spending one or two hours each day dedicated towards her ‘me-time’!

She is also preparing for UPSC exams alongside her PhD and expressed that she shares a cordial relationship with her family.

Things were going well for her, until she suffered from a breakup during her college time. Jyoti expressed that heard about YourDOST through her college. The platform was their college’s emotional wellness partner.
“I have been using the app for almost 2+ years now and the first time I got on it was because I was eagerly seeking help as things were very bad on my front and I needed a professional intervention.”

Jyoti also described that she actively started taking sessions post-COVID through audio/video mode.

“I lost all the confidence that I could do something good in life and started doubting myself.

The breakup and its aftermath were rather hard on Jyoti as she invested a lot of time in it. Jyoti was feeling very low and frustrated as well, to the point where she thought of quitting everything.

“My ex-boyfriend cheated on me with another person and this felt heart-breaking. On confronting him it became worse and he misbehaved with me.”

The help of her college’s provision of accessibility of confidential and anonymous counseling from YourDOST through Jyoti’s college resources gave her a sigh of relief.

Jyoti, like many of us, was feeling a bit hesitant to speak in front of a stranger initially but then, she told herself that it was for her good and so she gathered courage to speak about her breakup.

In her first counseling session, Jyoti spoke for with a counselor for about 40 minutes. Her counselor was polite and listened to her patiently. She was amused about how the counselor could help her be calm and only after listening to her issues.

Jyoti describes that her counselor taught her the 5-4-3-2-1 TECHNIQUES, Guided breathing, managing her whole day by tasking it out and controlling her emotions.

Counseling helped me understand self-love and manage my anxiety better. I was rigourously following through everything she taught me and never gave up on it. I wanted to see change and I realised that I am the only one who can put it work.”

Apart from these techniques, Jyoti’s counselor also encouraged her to feel good about herself and avoid negative thinking whenever she could. She has also been advised positive self-talk in front of a mirror by a counselor.

“She was like a human diary to me. She simply listened, without any interruption or advice. I expressed everything that was there on my mind.”

Jyoti rated her overall improvement through therapy a 5 on 5, as she believes she’s on the path to improvement. We, at YourDOST, are in awe of this champ’s bravery and never-quitting attitude! We wish her all the luck in her future endeavours.

“I have begun to understand things and my emotions better.”

Jyoti spoke of how her counselor has put her in a nice space and helped her love herself better. Don’t give up!

Jyoti’s Warrior Tips:
1.“Remember, every problem has a solution.”
2.“Try to talk to someone and find your human diary. Someone who doesn’t judge you and can simply listen to you. Even if it’s your dog, share things with her/him. Trust me, once you share, you’ll feel relieved.”
