Canvas of Courage: Mehek’s Story of Healing With YourDOST

3 minutes

Mehek is a 22-year-old B.Com Hons student of Sree Ram College of Commerce who grew up in the hills of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. Her hobbies include painting, dancing and singing. She is closer to her mother and shares an inseparable bond.

Being the first child, she received ample affection, yet her household was strict. Mehek recalls the difficulties with freedom – growing up under restriction as her father was very strict, limiting her independence.

“Now that I have grown, things have changed, I do what I wish to do.”

When Mehek moved to Mumbai after college, the wave of adult responsibilities hit her hard. For months, she struggled to stay afloat in the new city.

“I was disturbed. Between adjusting to living alone, meeting new people, and starting a job I disliked, I became exhausted.”

Adding to this stress was the trauma of past abuse Mehek faced in a prior relationship in college.

“An ex had physically hurt me. Those memories resurfaced intensely during that challenging time,” she says.

Lonely and lost, Mehek returned to Delhi, hoping for comfort in the familiar. But Delhi brought no relief.

“I felt stuck in a loop, wasting my days away unproductively. I constantly berated myself – ‘you can’t cope with a job, you’re so weak’ and so on. I was on the brink of self-harm.”

Mehek recalled how his college had partnered with YourDOST to provide mental and emotional health solutions to all. She decided to seek help from the experts and took her first step towards a new journey.

Meeting counselor Ms Mehek Singhania was a turning point. The non-judgemental space gave Mehek the confidence to open up completely.

“From our first session, I could tell this was different. She didn’t interrupt me, allowing me to vent freely. Her calm listening eased my anxiety.”

Ms Mehek provided practical coping strategies for managing anxiety. “The grounding techniques helped me stay present when I spiral into panic.” Regular meditation strengthened Mehek’s resilience. “I felt a little more in control with each homework assignment.”

Working with Ms Mehek S. gave Mehek the clarity she needed to make impactful life changes. Though progress felt slow at times, after a few months, the fog of depression lifted.

“I had tendencies to self-sabotage and shied away from asking for help. Now I can identify and stop those thought patterns.”

Mehek felt the transforming change and life took a turnaround with her and the counselor’s effort.

“I no longer wake up dreading the day ahead,” Mehek says. “The Counselor taught me to be kind to myself. I feel comfortable in my skin now.” She is thankful for the compassion she received.

“Mehek listened closely and talked sense into me. Her comforting words anchored me during the darkest period of my life.”

Mehek recalls one particularly low day when she considered self-harm. “I was able to call Mehek S., who calmed me down. She made me see I had so much to live for.”

Mehek has been through a journey of self-realisation and changes. She rates her transformation through counseling a 4 out of 5 and feels she is on the path to getting better with each passing day.

Mehek’s Warrior Tips:
1. “Be patient with yourself. Let the negative thoughts pass through you like clouds.”
2.“Reach out for help when you think you need it, there are people who understand and care about mental health.”
