5 Celebrities Who Have Battled Depression

3 minutes

What is the first image you get when you think of a depressed person? Someone who is unsuccessful and dull and poor and ugly, right?

Most of us have this misconception about depression – that you must have faced a catastrophe in order to be depressed, that your life must be pathetic.

But think of depression as any other physiological disorder – it doesn’t discriminate and is as simple as an imbalance in the chemicals and hormones of your body. It could happen to you, it could happen to anyone.

But we are not trying to bum you out, and we are definitely not trying to say that depression is all-pervading and that there is no happiness left in the World.

We are just saying that celebrities are humans too, but you can take faith and be inspired by how they overcome depression and decided to pay it forward by spreading awareness about mental health.

Well, here is a list of 5 successful, bright, rich and beautiful people who have battled depression.

  1. Deepika Padukone:

For someone who literally has it all – it was heart-breaking for many of her fans when Deepika Padukone admitted to having depression. But not only did Deepika fight depression, she also established ‘Live Love laugh’ to raise awareness about mental health and help others who went through the same trauma as her.

  1. Halle Berry

The Academy Award-winning actor was depressed during the failure of her first marriage in 1996. It went to such an extent that she even contemplated suicide! In her own words, “It was all about a relationship,” she said. “My sense of worth was so low. I had to reprogram myself to see the good in me. Because someone didn’t love me didn’t mean I was unlovable.”

But Shah Rukh Khan fans, don’t worry his depression is a thing of the past and he is back and active as ever!

Again, it may be a shock that the man who made us laugh till our sides ached was a patient of depression himself! Mr. Carrey has been vocal about his fight with depression and has also admitted to taking medication (from a prescribed doctor) for the same. He once said, “I was on Prozac for a long time…There are peaks, there are valleys. But they’re all kind of carved and smoothed out, and it feels like a low level of despair you live in. Where you’re not getting any answers, but you’re living OK. And you can smile at the office. You know?”
