A hundred and twenty years later, there are 11,239 athletes, from 207 countries are participating in 28 different sports in the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While that is close to a <strong>4500% increase in participation<\/strong>, the total number of participants are still a very small fraction of the world\u2019s population. What sets these people apart from the rest of the world? What has got them to represent their country at the grandest stage of them all? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We went through the lives of the greatest Olympians in the world, and startlingly, there were a few uncanny things that were common among all of them. Yes, they possessed god given talent, but if not for the insane amount of work they put in. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>They have achieved an Olympic state of mind and here\u2019s what you need to do to achieve it:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Legendary basketball player and Olympic gold medalist Michael Jordan is known for this quote &#8211; <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><i>\u201cI have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game-winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.\u201d &#8211; Michael Jordan<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the foremost important attribute to any kind of success is being able to impassionately self-reflect and see what went wrong. In most cases when athletes fail, they are the first to admit that they made a mistake and they focus on making sure that it never happens again. India\u2019s Olympic gold medalist takes it to a whole new level, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnaindia.com\/sport\/report-olympics-2012-abhinav-bindra-gets-mad-with-his-training-1720235\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as he tries to sleep amidst red ants to see how long he can hold on, to improve concentration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>We\u2019ve all heard of Malcolm Gladwell\u2019s 10,000-hour rule. For Olympians, it\u2019s about putting in more effort than that. You can make an exception with Olympians that they are blessed with innate abilities that make\u00a0them better than others at a sport. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But talent can only take you so far. The rest of the success is dependent on the hard work they put in. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. In their preparation for the biggest competition of them all, athletes sacrifice a lot more than what most would do in a lifetime. Be it following a strict regime or having no free time, right up to spending countless hours away from family, Olympic athletes put everything on the line to be the best at what they do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most athletes don\u2019t look at this as a\u00a0sacrifice. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ashotofadrenaline.net\/18-of-the-greatest-athletes-on-earth-share-their-insights-on-the-sacrifices-it-takes-to-get-to-the-top\/\" target=\"_blank\">In this chronicle of interviews<\/a> with 18 of the greatest athletes in the world, most of them denied sacrificing anything \u2013 they only looked at it as a choice they had to make to get better at what they do. A choice to be disciplined.
