If you have a promotion mindset, you look at networking positively and as an opportunity to grow and advance your skills. If you have a prevention mindset, you might view networking as an obligation you would rather get over with.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>In a study conducted by the Harvard Business Review, in the US and Italy, 2015-16, it was found that promotion-focused people enjoyed networking and approached it with excitement, curiosity, and an open mind, while prevention-focused people did not enjoy the activity very much. Naturally, it was the promotion focused people who were better at networking.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the good news as per Stanford University\u2019s Carol Dweck is, you can evolve from being a prevention-focused person to a promotion-focused person.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It\u2019s all about what you tell yourself:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of whining and complaining about having to \u2018schmooze\u2019 your way through the event, <strong>tell yourself that it is an opportunity to meet bright minds and thanks to your interactions<\/strong>, you might just come up with a brilliant idea!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Look for common interests:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to identify what you have in common, interest-wise, with the people you are going to meet. Northwestern University\u2019s Brian Uzzi calls this the shared activities principle.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>The most meaningful work relationships are those where there is an interdependence and mutual need for the other person\u2019s expertise. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might just be the person someone is looking for to make the perfect team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>See how you can contribute:<\/b><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Another finding revealed by the Harvard Business Review is that people in higher positions, those who exert more influence, tend to enjoy networking more than people in lower positions with lesser influence. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you never know what you bring to the table \u2013 it need not necessarily be tangible resources like money or technical help, but soft skills like gratitude and recognition are much in demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Find a higher purpose:<\/b><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>The same study found that\u00a0those who approached networking as doing something good for the overall development of the organization, felt less \u2019dirty\u2019 about networking, than those who saw it as a method of furthering personal goals.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So change the way you look at networking events and tweak your attitude a little bit with these 4 steps, and you won\u2019t just be able to make it through those networking events, but you might even benefit from them!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left; color: black;\"><em>Do you feel scared and anxious to meet and talk to people?
