We all have heard a lot about marriages being a bond built on trust , understanding and lifelong commitment. But is perfect marriage always the scenario?<\/p>\n

Though divorce rate in India has always been low, when compared to many other countries abroad, it cannot be denied that\u00a0the recent years have seen a surge in the number of divorces being filed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As per court officials<\/a>, the number of divorce applications has doubled and even tripled in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Lucknow over the past five years.<\/strong> What’s more surprising is that\u00a0it’s not only the number of divorces that has increased, but also the causes of divorce has seen a change.<\/p>\n

“Earlier, couples would come to me to fix the marriage. Now, I have young couples who have come just to convince their family or partner that a divorce is the right decision,” said Mumbai-based Psychotherapist\u00a0and counsellor Pallavi Bhurkay,\u00a0in her statement to Hindustan Times.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She also adds that:<\/p>\n

“Now we see young couples who want to separate because they cannot agree on who will do the chores, or because they have realised that they no longer like each other. Most of these are young couples in the first or second year of marriage.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Are Adjustment Issues Breaking Marriages?<\/h2>\n

In most of the recent cases, adjustment issues\u00a0were the major cause that led to the breaking of marriages. Most of these issues, come up in the early period of marriage. For instance:<\/p>\n

According to Bala (name changed)\u00a0his wife always did what her sister told her. He tried reasoning out with her but she did not stop reporting each and everything that happened between them to her sister.\u00a0Finally, he decided to call it quits.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Some of the leading causes that trigger adjustment issues are personality clashes, troubles with family and in-laws, disagreement between partners, financial issues, a secretive past of either of the partners, lack emotional, physical and recreational intimacy, lack of mutual understanding, decision-making independence and less tolerance level between partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, these issues are normal today. Given the increased importance of career, more and more instances of inter-caste relationships, and increasing financial independence of partners, such adjustment issues are bound to happen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some Things to Keep in Mind while Dealing with Adjustment Issues:<\/h2>\n

1. Try to accept each other’s differences:\u00a0<\/h3>\n

It’s a known truth that each one of us is\u00a0unique and we come with our\u00a0own strengths & weaknesses and\u00a0likes & dislikes. The beauty of a relationship should lie in appreciating these differences, rather than being critical about each of them.<\/p>\n

2. People crave for being valued and respected:<\/h3>\n

Peter Baumann from University of \u000b\f\u0004\u0005Aberdeen, in his research<\/a>,\u00a0states that\u00a0respect is one of the basic human needs<\/strong>. It is normal for a person to come across many differences, in the early days of marriage. The beliefs and traditions one’s partner follows might be very contrary to their own belief system and upbringing. In such situation, it is important that partners respect each other’s belief systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n

3. The Power of Touch:<\/h3>\n

Touch and other non-verbal means of communication, like making eye contact while talking, are important for the success of a relationship.\u00a0Jessica Spott Colleen, Pyle Narissra and Maria Punyanunt-Carter, of Texas University, conducted a research<\/a> on how important non-verbal communication is in a relationship<\/strong>. The results showed that couples who share such non-verbal communication had more chances of having a happy relationship.<\/p>\n

4. Open Communication:<\/h3>\n

Along with non-verbal communication, it is important that there is a\u00a0possibility of open communication between the partners. According to a survey<\/a> conducted in 2013, poor communication was the number one reason why\u00a0couples split<\/strong>. It is important that\u00a0one has the freedom to express themselves freely in a relationship. If a partner does not like a particular habit of the other partner, it is better resolved when communicated well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

5. Be Honest:<\/h3>\n

Honesty has always been the best policy and it applies even to a relationship.\u00a0Research <\/a>conducted by\u00a0Dr. Bella DePaulo\u00a0shows that 64% of the serious lies (\u201cdeep betrayals of trust\u201d) told by people are to their partners.<\/strong> Betrayal in a relationship makes hampers its core, which is built on trust. Thus, it’s important that a person shares every important secret with his or her partner. Hiding them is not a long-term solution.<\/p>\n
