Despite being the obvious first question, many candidates fumble to effectively answer this question, and fail to make an impact. But answering it well doesn\u2019t just help in creating a good first impression, but also increases the chance of getting through as this becomes your weapon to steer the interview in the direction you would want to. And that\u2019s why it is important to answer it well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/yourdost-blog-images.s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/03115050\/interview-compressor.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8136\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8136\" src=\"http:\/\/yourdost-blog-images.s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/03115050\/interview-compressor.jpg\" alt=\"interview-compressor\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>In this post, I share some tips that will help you answer the dreaded interview question better.<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Keep it short:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your answer to the question of \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tell me something about yourself\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be between 90<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> -120 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seconds. Also, try not to include something that is already there in your resume or is very obvious about you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Very briefly talk about your academics &amp; achievements: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can highlight about your highest academic qualifications and achievements in that sphere or things that you were part of. For instance, <em>I was among the 0.1% merit holders<\/em>, or <em>I was the student\u2019s body president<\/em>, or <em>the placement co-ordinator, or the member of the\u00a0literary club<\/em>, etc. You can briefly highlight your achievements on being part of such activities &amp; roles. For example, <em>I drove the entire placements of my institute and increased the average salary from XX to YY INR\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Talk about your work experience: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While talking about<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work experience don\u2019t get into the specifics of your work. Here again, highlight your major accomplishments, for instance, if you were in sales, your response could be <em>in my previous role, I worked as a sales manager and I have increased the overall sales by X%<\/em>. <strong>Caveat:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Never get into details, as people will lose interest, but do highlight the impact you had brought in your work.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><em>Want to get more tips on how to prepare for personal interviews for Job interview, MBA entrances and other competitive exams? You can\u00a0t<\/span><\/b>alk about a specific instance where you hit a roadblock and explain how did you go about resolving it. It could be from your work experience or from your academic life, but it has to be something worth talking about.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Talk about what defines you as a person: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When highlighting about your key traits such as leadership, creative problem solving and other skills, cite specific instances from your life to prove why you are the best candidate for the role. Your answer must be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tailored<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the interview you are giving, and the skills needed for the role. Likewise, if you are giving an interview for the MBA entrance, you must highlight what made you decide to go for an MBA course while highlighting the specific instance which triggered it.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Highlight points you are absolutely sure<\/b><b> <\/b><b>about: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directing the interviewer completely depends on you. Make sure you give the interviewers, points for questioning on things you are comfortable answering. For example, talk about your research topic which you know in and out. This way they get a chance to ask you questions on it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong> Here are a few additional tips:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be extremely thorough with your resume.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Be confident and smile.
