Sometimes, it feels like the current is too strong, pulling us into despair. Yet, just as the river eventually finds its way to the sea, we can move through our darkest moments towards a place of peace.

Meet Priyanshi, a 26-year-old from Ahmedabad. A working professional, Priyanshi had a job for two years before starting her own business as an interior designer just about a month ago.

“I’ve always had a very rough childhood in terms of emotional management. The dynamics with my family are not as cordial as one would expect it to be.”

Strained interpersonal relationships with her family have left Priyanshi grappling with childhood trauma that has seeped into her adult life. This is a significant issue she’s been addressing in her therapy sessions.

Priyanshi has found a way to maintain balance in her life through various hobbies.

“I really like reading. I enjoy having a balanced life. I like to go out on some days, and I like to rest, take walks, watch movies, enjoy sunsets, be around nature or anything that makes me feel calm.”

Priyanshi first heard about YourDOST from Ahmedabad University, which partners with the organisation as its official mental health partner. A friend who was already using the platform for therapy recommended it.

“When I was dealing with a lot of problems and struggling to understand them, my friend pushed me towards therapy.”

Priyanshi’s counsellor, Rineeta Banerjee, has been a significant part of her journey.

“She showed the sort of empathy that everyone else lacked. People quickly jump to conclusions about what must be wrong with me, but Rineeta showed me empathy. The main thing I felt I lacked in my life was support and empathy.”

Rineeta extended an understanding hand towards Priyanshi. She validated her thoughts, listened patiently, and never judged her. She broke down her issues in an easily digestible way for Priyanshi to understand.

Priyanshi shares a turning point in her life that led her to seek therapy.

“A life-changing event happened between me and my family. I was physically abused and completely shut down from the external world for three months. I lost friends and other relationships, which triggered all the negative issues from my childhood and instilled a layer of fear inside me.”

After a year of struggling, Priyanshi took a leap of faith and decided to try therapy. Initially sceptical, she was pleasantly surprised by the relief it brought.

“I used to rely on anxiety medications, but with therapy, I gradually weaned off them. Today, I’m very aware of myself, my triggers, my patterns, and it has given me a new approach towards life.”

In her sessions with Rineeta, Priyanshi learned several techniques to manage her anxiety and stress.

“The first thing she told me to try was progressive muscle relaxation because I couldn’t sleep at night. Then we worked on grounding techniques, affirmations, journaling, four-box breathing, and meditation.”

Priyanshi reflects on the positive changes therapy has brought into her life.

“Earlier, I used to victimise myself a lot and feel very helpless. I learned I’m not alone in this journey, which calms me. I started seeing people for who they are, understanding that one unfavourable action doesn’t mean they don’t care for me.”

Priyanshi is deeply grateful to her therapist for her unwavering support.

“Rineeta treats me in a way that I’ve always wanted to be treated. I’m very thankful to her.”

Priyanshi rates herself a 4 out of 5 in terms of feeling better. She believes improvement means being more self-aware, constantly learning new techniques, and unlearning old behaviours.

We at YourDOST are confident that Priyanshi is on her way to hitting the golden 5 mark.
