{"id":16604,"date":"2021-02-26T17:01:33","date_gmt":"2021-02-26T11:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/?p=16604"},"modified":"2021-04-15T13:07:18","modified_gmt":"2021-04-15T07:37:18","slug":"saurav-phd-woes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/saurav-phd-woes.html","title":{"rendered":"Saurav Learnt That Perfection Isn&#8217;t Always the Best Approach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you ever Google the phrase \u201cPhD problems\u201d and open any of the results, one common point that you\u2019ll find being listed is that of \u201cfeeling stuck\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For Saurav, 36, this problem has been the bane of his happiness.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I have been trying to finish my PhD thesis. For some reason, I\u2019m unable to finish it on time. So it has dragged on for a long time now.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Saurav has been employed as a lecturer with one of the country\u2019s top law schools for a while now. He finds himself unaffected when it comes to his professional work.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16606\" src=\"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/warriorstory-blog-saurav-1.jpg\" alt=\"He has been unable to complete his PhD work for many years\" width=\"640\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI find that with my office work, I\u2019m quite efficient and feel quite motivated. But when I sit down to write my thesis, I make very little progress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Saurav tried everything, including working over holidays and weekends but to no avail. All this affected him emotionally too. His self-esteem and self-confidence were badly hit.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI became very pessimistic about my abilities to work on things. I would feel this constant nagging thought in my head &#8211; \u201cI\u2019ll not be able to do it\u201d \u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Saurav would often find himself stress-eating. He found that his energy levels were going down and he also gained weight.<\/p>\n<p>He somewhat understood why he hadn\u2019t been able to make progress too.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI wanted everything I was working on to be perfect. I was never satisfied with the progress that I had made. For this reason, I would be stuck at the same place for a long time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He goes into further details &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInstead of just finishing my thesis, I wanted it to be something extraordinary. Every line I wrote, I would keep revising. When I was unable to achieve these standards, I felt full of negativity. I thought that I\u2019m not worth it and that I won\u2019t do well in life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16607 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/warriorstory-blog-saurav-2.jpg\" alt=\"His perfectionism was only slowing him down\" width=\"640\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/350;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With so much frustration and anguish in his mind Saurav finally decided to approach YourDOST for support.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI found YourDOST to be really easy to use. You can login, you can chat anytime, you can explore whom to connect with.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He connected with Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Ms. Sudha Ananth and thus started his journey of self-improvement. To dig into and identify the precise problems that Saurav was struggling with, they started with his childhood and got some really good insights from that.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSince I was a child, I was under a lot of pressure from my parents to do well academically. That made me very negative, very pessimistic in my outlook. Basically, I would never celebrate even if I would succeed. I would just think about how I could\u2019ve done better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She also taught him various breathing exercises as well as PMR to help him focus better. According to Saurav, he has noticed two main changes in his thinking thanks to counseling:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. He should not aim for perfection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If I have made some achievement, I should celebrate instead of just ignoring it<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He further adds<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever, you have in life, cherish it; and if you don\u2019t have something, there\u2019s nothing you can do about it. You should try to find ways to achieve what is possible for you rather than running after perfection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. He has come to accept his past.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whatever time I\u2019ve lost, whatever I could not achieve, I should not lament about that. This has been a difficult step for me. I\u2019m trying to accept whatever happened in my past and not regret it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Saurav has indeed changed his outlook towards life.
