{"id":16130,"date":"2020-12-24T12:09:49","date_gmt":"2020-12-24T06:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/?p=16130"},"modified":"2020-12-29T11:38:47","modified_gmt":"2020-12-29T06:08:47","slug":"smitas-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/2020\/12\/smitas-story.html","title":{"rendered":"From Being Diagnosed With OCD to Consciously Being Disorganized, Smita Creatively Wins Herself Back!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16131\" src=\"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/ydstory-blog-smita-cover.jpg\" alt=\"From being diagnosed with OCD to consciously being disorganized, Smita creatively wins herself back!\" width=\"1250\" height=\"654\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew nothing about the field of design,\u201d chuckles Smita, when asked how she got into the field of Graphic Design. \u201cAfter school, some of my friends were trying to get into Design Institutes, so I joined the flock, without reading up or doing any kind of research beforehand\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having thrown herself into a field which she knew little about, <\/span>Smita found herself immediately struggling at college.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Her lack of knowledge led to some poorly-informed choices, resulting in a less than pleasant college experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was horrible actually,\u201d Smita says with a grim smile. \u201cI was specializing in Apparel Design, specifically knitwear, which I knew absolutely nothing about!!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16132 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/ydstory-blog-smita3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Smita creatively wins herself back in the world of mental health and design\" width=\"640\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/350;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While Smita struggled to find her passion with academics, she was surprised to find that college proved beneficial in one specific way. It took care of the problem she had been experiencing at home.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her school days, <\/span>Smita had found life to be exhausting<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I used to feel compelled to do a lot of things more than once. Like walking up the stairs. Or even reading and writing. When you feel compelled to read and write everything in two\u2019s and four\u2019s, life can get so tiring!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a young girl, Smita had no idea about what she was going through, of course. Little did she know that her condition even had a name.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI remember once I was bawling my eyes out in the bathroom, all because <\/span>I couldn\u2019t understand <i>why <\/i>I had to turn the switch on more than once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the change in environment from home to college helped significantly. Out of curiosity, one day in college, Smita decided to Google exactly why she felt compelled to do everything in two\u2019s and four\u2019s.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is when I first came across something called OCD. I was diagnosed with it much later of course, but at that time, I joined an OCD forum and learnt more about this condition. And I finally thought to myself &#8211;<\/span> <i>I\u2019m tired of this. I need to seek help<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Thus, Smita finally decided to seek help from a therapist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at a really low point in my life,\u201d she says. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t call it depression, but there was a sadness inside me. And during one phase, my therapist suggested that I consult a psychiatrist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upon her therapist\u2019s suggestion, Smita decided to consult a psychiatrist near her home-town. Smita was eventually put on antidepressants for almost a year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16134 lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/yourdost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/ydstory-blog-smita2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Smita, OCD, Graphic Design\" width=\"640\" height=\"350\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 640px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 640\/350;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really weird phase of my life,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI used to have so many memory lapses. Someone would tell me something, and in the next five minutes, I would forget!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time she finished college, however, <\/span>Smita slowly started noticing signs of improvement.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Her OCD was now manageable, and she had stopped taking her antidepressants as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that her conditions got better, she feels that the ghosts of her OCD and depression still haunt her from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt pops its head up from time to time,\u201d she says humorously. \u201cBut now I\u2019m able to tell myself &#8211; \u2018no, that\u2019s just your OCD speaking\u2019, and I am able to break the cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has even found some <\/span>light-hearted ways of dealing with it<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I mess up the contents in my almirah on purpose,\u201d she says laughing. \u201cI force myself to be disorganized on certain days, and it helps to bring me out of that rut!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having dealt with mental illness all her life, she is now working in the mental health space herself. At college, she used to get newsletters by YourDOST, and used to think, \u201cIt would be so nice to work there!\u201d And when she soon saw that there were open positions available, she didn\u2019t think twice. On a break from college, she grabbed her opportunity and joined the YourDOST team.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I liked what they did a lot and so I wanted to work with them!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As a constant work in progress, therefore, Smita truly believes in bettering herself in all ways. When she first joined YourDOST, she was looking for a place to practically apply the skills she had picked up over the years. Now, however, she is heading back to college to finish her education, upskill herself and conquer the world of design in new and more creative ways.
