Mindfulness is a way of paying attention with care and discernment to yourself, others and the world around you. There is evidence from clinical contexts which prove that mindfulness is beneficial.<\/p>\n<p>There are several <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/mindfulness-app-meditation\/id417071430?mt=8\">apps<\/a>, self-help books and corporate interventions for leaders to become more mindful. This helps them become more flexible, and aware of changes and also maintain their focus. If it does, how? And how much effort do you need to make to achieve results?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Harvard Business School conducted a study on the trending topic of mindfulness training. A\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multisession mindful leader program was held, which included a wait-list control group. Half of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">participants received their training immediately and the other half received it later, but they\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">measured key characteristics in both groups at the same times. By comparing the two groups\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">results, the effect of training was concluded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study showed that mindfulness training and sustained practice produced statistically\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significant improvements in three capacities that are important for successful leadership in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21st century: <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>resilience, capacity for collaboration, and ability to lead in complex conditions. <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The above mentioned was a case of formal mindfulness practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. The leaders further took several different formal mindfulness exercises. In addition, they were encouraged to follow informal mindfulness practices.<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 20px 5px 20px 5px; padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px; background-color: #f9f9f9; background-repeat: no-repeat; text-align: center; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>The research showed that leaders who practised the formal mindfulness exercises for more than 10 minutes per day fared much better on key measures than those who didn\u2019t.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>The message is clear: If you want the benefits, you have to put in the time to practise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We know that those who are at senior positions, don&#8217;t have enough time and are most busy. Let&#8217;s put the time commitment in perspective. We also know that\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior executives spend an\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average of 1,060 minutes awake per day. And yet allocating just 10 minutes \u2014 less than 1% of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their waking hours \u2014 to practising mindfulness proves demanding for some and impossible for others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The research points out the challenges leaders face to practice mindfulness:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. \u00a0Leaders seek out\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindfulness as a solution to their crushing work pressures, their busy timetables, their multiple\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">task lists \u2014 and yet it is precisely these things that then get in the way of their practice. <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 20px 5px 20px 5px; padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px; background-color: #f9f9f9; background-repeat: no-repeat; text-align: center; font-size: 15px;\"><strong>In the\u00a0research, \u201cbusyness\u201d and a focus on what needed to be done in the short term was one of the\u00a0most commonly cited reasons for the lack of practice. <\/strong><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. The leaders frequently berated themselves for their lack of practice. They\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">felt guilty and even anxious.\u00a0As they piled pressure on themselves, some began to dislike\u00a0practice and a few finally resisted altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 20px 5px 20px 5px; padding: 10px 10px 10px 10px; background-color: #f9f9f9; background-repeat: no-repeat; text-align: center; font-size: 15px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One memorable quote from an exasperated leader was, <strong>\u201cI\u2019m\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>stressed about this mindfulness!\u201d <\/strong><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Leaders can rarely develop a new habit, including practising mindfulness, without help and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support from others. Some leaders in the research received generous encouragement from their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">partners and work colleagues. In moments when they might have given up, this support\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sustained them. Some others were met with cynicism and in a few cases were even teased, but they continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the research concludes that mindfulness is not inherited but it can be learnt with practice.
